About MAES: The early years

MAES was established in the 1960s by Jozef (Jef) Maes. Initially, it was a local company supplying Beverol-Oil lubricants to garages and industrial businesses. Over time, MAES expanded its offering to include heating oil, specifically for private individuals.

The step to petrol stations

From the 1970s onwards, MAES experienced rapid growth. The company began diversifying its range and gradually added more types of fuel. The first significant milestone occurred during this period with the opening of its first independent petrol pumps.

In the 1980s, Jef’s sons, Dirk and Luc Maes, joined the company. This marked the beginning of a focused expansion: a local network of petrol stations was developed, operating under the MAES name. This growth continued steadily over the years.

A major breakthrough came in 2013 when MAES acquired nearly 40 Esso stations in the provinces of Antwerp and Flemish Brabant. Since then, the network has grown consistently to nearly 300 stations across Belgium.

New branding and logo

In 2018, MAES modernised its branding and logo. While this update brought a fresh look, it retained the connection to the company’s historical roots. In the second quarter of 2018, MAES launched the MAES Mobility Card, enabling companies to provide their employees with a single card for all mobility-related services.

In addition to traditional fuels such as diesel and petrol, MAES also offers alternatives like LPG, CNG, and AdBlue®. AdBlue® is available not only at the petrol stations but also in bulk or through the unique AdBlue® Proximity concept.

At MAES Energy & Mobility, we’re also contributing to the future of electric vehicles (EVs). We introduced the MAES Hybrid Card, allowing users to refuel at 1,700 petrol stations and charge at more than 300,000 charging points in the Benelux. Additionally, we’ve installed ultra-fast charging stations at dozens of locations in collaboration with Sparki. These charging stations enable vehicles to recharge in just 15 to 20 minutes, allowing drivers to travel hundreds of kilometres in no time.

Acquisition and transitions

In 2023, MAES was acquired by the Dutch company Hametha. While the ownership structure changed, the day-to-day operations, staff, and service remained unchanged. The acquisition allows MAES to continue expanding its network and focusing more on sustainable energy solutions.

Furthermore, MAES remains committed to innovation, acquiring relevant stations and developing new mobility solutions, such as a fuel and charging card for all of Europe in partnership with an external provider.

Revamped and new shops

The updates don’t stop at petrol stations and charging points. Shops under the name L’Unique received a thorough makeover. Additionally, several existing shops were acquired and refurbished, ensuring customers can enjoy a modern and customer-friendly experience.

MAES app for fuel card customers and private users

The MAES app for fuel card customers has been available since 2021, but in 2024, we also launched an app for private users. Fuel card customers already enjoy discounts, but now private users can collect points and save for rewards. The app enables contactless payment and allows you to activate the pump remotely. You can also easily navigate to the nearest petrol station!
