Do you already have an electric or hybrid car, or are you seriously considering buying one? Then you are probably looking into where you can charge it. The most convenient option is, of course, charging at home, so you don’t lose any time on the road. If you also have solar panels, it can even make a difference to the price. But can and are you allowed to charge at home? And how do you get started?
It is certainly possible to install a charging point or charging cable at home, provided you have the space. There are two ways to charge your electric or hybrid car at home. You can either opt for MODE 2 charging, i.e. via a mains socket, or MODE 3 charging, via a charging point. One is a bit slower, but you don’t need much for it, and the other allows you to charge faster at home, but requires the installation of a charging station or charging cable at home.
With Mode 2, you will receive a smart charging cable when you purchase your electric car. The cable has an EV connector and a plug as you are used to. The cable also has an ICCB (In-Cable Control Box) or IC-CPD (In-Cable Control and Protecting Device) with built-in current limitation. The IC-CPD contains the safety device that would otherwise be located in the charging point at home, and this box can exchange information with your electric or hybrid car in the same way as a charging point.
With the limited diameter of a domestic socket, the charging current must be limited to 10A. Due to this limitation to 10A, the maximum charging power is 2.3 kW.
With Mode 3 charging, electric vehicles can be charged in a controlled manner because communication takes place between the car and the charger. Only when a suitable charging current has been determined by both parties is power supplied to the socket. To charge at home with Mode 3, you need a customised connection, which can be single-phase or three-phase. When charging at home with 3-phase, the main connection may need to be expanded to 3 phases. Home connections supply alternating current (AC), while electric vehicles need direct current (DC) to charge their batteries. Therefore, an inverter in the vehicle converts the alternating current to direct current. AC charging therefore falls under Mode 3 charging. A Mode 3 charging station at home can supply much more power than a standard socket and can deliver from 1-phase 3.6 kW (230V/16A) to 3-phase 22 kW (400V/32A).
A charging point at home, cheap charging? This depends entirely on your individual situation. For example, do you have solar panels with an extra storage battery? Then this can certainly make a difference. If you don’t currently have the best rate with your energy supplier and don’t have solar panels, charging at home may still be a more expensive option than, for example, a petrol car. Let’s take a closer look.
Yes, in Belgium you are allowed to install a smart charging cable or charging station at home and then make it available to the public. However, there are a number of things you need to take into account.
In short, it is possible to make your personal charging station public in Belgium, but it is important to be well informed about the technical and legal aspects involved.
If you do not have space, you can request a public charging station on public land as a citizen or business using this online form. If you do not have space for a charging station yourself and an existing public charging station is too far away, you can still get a station no more than 250 metres from your door.
