With the MAES charging card, you can easily charge at more than 700,000 public charging points in over 30 European countries. Whether you choose standard AC chargers or ultra-fast DC stations, you are always connected to the extensive MAES charging network.

Can I charge my electric car anywhere?

No, unfortunately you cannot charge your electric car anywhere with a charging card. Although the number of charging points has increased in recent years, it is still important to check the availability of charging points in the areas where you drive. With a MAES charging card for your electric car, you can often access public charging points much more easily, but it is always a good idea to check in advance which charging points are compatible with your car.

Various apps and websites show the location and availability of charging points in real time, allowing you to plan your journeys optimally. It is also important to check whether the charging capacity and connection are suitable for your car.

What are the different types of connections for electric charging?

There are different types of connections for electric charging. The most commonly used ones are listed below. Please note: some electric cars are compatible with multiple connections, but it is important to check which connection is suitable for your specific car.

  • Charging cable Type 1 (J1772)
    • This is the most commonly used connection for electric cars in North America and Japan.
  • Charging cable Type 2 (Mennekes)
    • This is the most commonly used connection for electric cars in Europe and Asia.
  • Chademo
    • This is a fast charger standard used for Japanese electric cars.
  • CCS (Combined Charging System):
    • This is a new standard that supports both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) fast charging and is increasingly used in Europe and North America.
  • Tesla Supercharger
    • This is an exclusive connector for Tesla cars, which enables fast charging.

What connections can you find at MAES Stations?

At MAES, we are installing around 100 Ultra-Fast Charging stations at our locations, in collaboration with Sparki. These allow you to charge your electric car within 10 to 30 minutes for hundreds of kilometres of driving range. The MAES charging card gives you access to all these charging stations and makes using them easy and reliable.

Sparki’s current ultra-fast charging stations deliver up to 350 kW, which is sufficient for most cars. This allows you to charge your battery to 80% in minimal time. With a charging card, you can pay quickly and start your charging session, saving you a lot of time compared to a traditional charging station.

Where is the best place to charge your car?

The best place to charge your car depends on the price and charging capacity. If you are on the road and urgently need to charge your car, a fast charger at a public charging point may be the best option, even if it is slightly more expensive. If you have the option to charge your car at home and, for example, have solar panels, then charging at home is the best option. So it all depends on your situation. Below, we take a look at the different options.

EV auto
  • Charging at home: One major advantage of an electric car is that you can often recharge it at home. You can do this using a standard power socket. Of course, check your electricity tariff first and try to charge during off-peak hours. If you have solar panels, this can even be a cheaper option! You can also opt for a higher-capacity charging station at home.
  • Charging at work: Some employers encourage their employees to take an electric company car because it is easier for them to introduce them. They often provide an option to charge the car at work, sometimes at a cheaper rate. This allows you to charge the car while you are working and you don’t lose any time.
  • Public charging stations: accessible with a charging card for electric cars. MAES is currently installing ultra-fast charging stations; with a MAES charging card, you can use them quickly and easily.
  • Free charging while shopping: A number of retail chains already offer this option. For example, you can charge your car for free at some IKEA stores. However, this led to the phenomenon of “charging tourism”, where people came to charge their cars without shopping. That is why they are now restricting this. Lidl, for example, has already reduced the power of its charging stations and limited charging time to one hour, and only during opening hours. The NMBS also has charging stations in many of its public car parks, where train season ticket holders enjoy a preferential rate. It is expected that “free” charging will soon no longer be offered, but we are not there yet.
