Fuel oil heating

Gas oil heating – also called fuel oil or heating oil – is a cheap fuel for both your home and commercial buildings.

What is gas oil and why choose gas oil heating?

When considering efficient and reliable heating options, gas oil (also known as fuel oil) is an excellent choice. In Belgium, fuel oil remains a popular energy source for both individuals and businesses due to its numerous benefits. But what exactly is gas oil, and why should you choose gas oil heating?

What is gas oil (fuel oil)?

Gas oil, better known as fuel oil, is a liquid fuel commonly used for heating purposes. It is derived from crude oil and is known for its high energy efficiency. In everyday language, gas oil is often referred to as heating oil. Thanks to its reliability and efficiency, fuel oil has been a favorite in Belgian households and businesses for years.

The benefits of gas oil heating

More and more Belgian companies and families are consciously choosing gas oil heating. But what makes this fuel so attractive? Here are the main advantages:

Economical and efficient

Modern heating systems that run on gas oil or fuel oil are designed to significantly reduce consumption. Compared to older systems, consumption can be reduced by up to 40%. This means not only lower energy costs but also a smaller ecological footprint.

Safe to use

Safety is one of the biggest advantages of fuel oil. Under normal ambient temperatures (below 55°C), gas oil is not flammable. Additionally, the risk of CO poisoning is almost nonexistent due to the controlled combustion in modern boilers. This makes gas oil a safe choice for your home or business.

Independent and flexible

Another key benefit of gas oil is the independence it offers. You have your own energy supply and decide when to order fuel oil. This allows you to take advantage of the best fuel oil prices and prevents you from being tied to fixed contracts or delivery conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is gas oil winter-resistant?

Yes, gas oil is generally winterised. It has a lower freezing point than some other fuels, such as hydrogen gas, which means it can function well in colder climates. However, there is also special winter gas oil that has further improved properties for extreme cold.

Can I use gas oil in agricultural machinery?

Yes, gas oil is often used in agricultural machinery, such as tractors and harvesters. It is cheaper than regular diesel and is specifically classified for non-road use, offering tax benefits to farmers and farms, if they have a quota number.

Is gas oil suitable for modern condensing boilers?

Yes, gas oil can be used in modern condensing boilers, although condensing boilers function best with natural gas or propane. The efficiency of gas oil may be lower than that of gas, but it can still be a good choice, especially in areas without natural gas infrastructure.

What are the benefits of gas oil for heating systems?

Gas oil (mazout) is a widely used fuel for heating systems because of its high energy content, long storage time without loss of quality and cost efficiency. It provides a stable and reliable heat supply, even during cold periods, and has a lower chance of clogging the system compared to other fuels.

How can I order gas oil?

Ordering gas oil, gas oil Extra or gas oil Plus is quick and easy via our revamped order form. Indicate the quantity and give us the necessary information, and we will do the rest!

What is the difference between gas oil and heating oil?

Mazout is mainly used for heating purposes in homes and businesses. It is a reliable fuel that provides even and comfortable heat.

Gas oil is a more advanced variant suitable for heating as well as for use in engines and machinery. It has cleaner combustion and has been specially developed to meet the requirements of modern heating systems, including condensing boilers.
In short, the main difference is that gas oil Extra is more suitable for both heating purposes and machinery, while mazout is specifically intended for heating

What is gas oil and what is it used for?

Gas oil is a fuel used for heating systems as well as engines and machinery. It is an advanced fuel that ensures cleaner combustion, leading to reduced black smoke emissions and less chance of clogging particulate filters. At MAES, we offer Gas Oil Extra, Gas Oil Plus and ‘regular’ gas oil suitable for all types of boilers, including the latest generation of condensing boilers. In winter, this gas oil is also winterised to -20°C, which is ideal for above-ground tanks and machinery exposed to cold temperatures.

Inspection of your gas oil tank

On 1 March 2009, the inspection of all then-existing private fuel oil tanks in the Flemish Region became mandatory. Whether you need to invite a technician again after that initial inspection depends on the size and location of your tank. For example, this is not the case if you have an above-ground tank of less than 6,000 litres. If your tank is larger or is underground, separate regulations apply.
