  The price of heating oil depends on the price of a barrel of crude oil on the international market, and is subject to the law of supply and demand and the evolution of the dollar exchange rate.

Legislation

Anyone who heats with gas oil and wants to order heating oil must take into account a number of legal requirements, including those relating to the inspection of your heating oil tank. These rules are obviously not designed to make life difficult for you, but rather to guarantee the quality and optimum efficiency of your heating installation, so that you can sleep easy.

Premiums and allowances

• Social heating fund

Together with the government and OCMWs, the petroleum sector takes care of low-income people by partially intervening in the payment of their heating oil bills. On the website of the Flemish government you can read who is eligible for a heating allowance.

• Cheque voor stookoliegebruikers

The government will award this cheque to any entitled person who has received a delivery of bulk fuel oil or propane intended for heating his main residence between 15 November 2021 and 31 March 2023.

• Flemish improvement premium

Thanks to the Flemish improvement premium, as an owner or tenant you can receive financial compensation if you replace your existing oil-fired boiler with one with European energy label A or B, or if you have your flue optimised.

• Premiums related to a hybrid heating system

Thanks to a hybrid heating installation – which combines heating oil with a renewable energy source – you enjoy free energy, while fuel oil as an energy buffer completely eliminates the supply risk of that renewable energy. For solar boilers and heat pumps, you also get premiums in Flanders.

• Flemish renovation premium for boiler replacement

For the installation of a high-efficiency fuel oil boiler – i.e. one with a European energy label A or B – you can apply for a renovation premium in Flanders, which will refund up to 30% of your bill. You can find all the information on Wonen Vlaanderen.

Fuel tank: installation, maintenance and inspection

Before you can have your heating oil tank installed, you need to cut some important knots. For instance, do you want an underground or an above-ground heating oil tank? An underground heating oil tank is discreet and does not take up valuable space, but then again it is more difficult to replace and needs to be checked more often. A new above-ground fuel oil tank is easier to install, visually check and maintain. Moreover, you can get rid of it with a one-off inspection after installation. Whichever option you choose: always use a professional installer who can also provide you with the necessary certificates.

Maintenance of your heating oil tank

Although your heating oil tank requires little or no maintenance, it is important to maintain your heating installation properly. Fuel oil installations should be serviced annually to ensure proper operation and a long service life for your boiler and burner and to reduce your consumption. Maintenance includes cleaning the chimney and the boiler.

Fuel oil tank inspection

On 1 March 2009, the inspection of all then-existing private heating oil tanks in the Flemish Region became mandatory. Whether you need to invite a technician again after that initial inspection depends on the size and location of your tank. For example, this is not the case if you have an above-ground tank of less than 6,000 litres. If your tank is larger or underground, separate regulations apply.
