When is it time to switch to winter tyres?

The winter months bring not only cold and snow, but also a significant impact on driving conditions. Therefore, it is crucial to switch to winter tyres in time. But when is the right time and why is it so important?

Tips

Why winter tyres?

Winter tyres are specially designed to provide optimum grip in cold and winter conditions. They have a softer rubber compound that ensures better performance at temperatures below 7°C. This means they are more effective on snow and ice, giving you more control over your vehicle. Moreover, winter tyres have a special tread that prevents you from slipping, which is crucial for safety.

When is it time for winter tyres?

A good rule of thumb is to fit your winter tyres when the temperature consistently drops below 7°C. This could be as early as October or November, depending on the weather in your region. Many experts recommend changing before the first snowfall or icy conditions so that you are well prepared for the road.

The benefits of switching to winter tyres

  1. Improved safety. Changing to winter tyres in time reduces the risk of accidents in winter conditions.
  2. Short braking distances. Winter tyres offer shorter braking distances, which is crucial in sudden situations.
  3. Longer life of tyre sets. By changing in time, you avoid excessive wear on your summer tyres.
  4. Better driving experience. You drive with more confidence and comfort, knowing that your vehicle is equipped for winter.

Why not just four-season tyres?

Four-season tyres are versatile and suitable for both summer and winter, but in extreme winter conditions they do not perform as well as winter tyres. For regions with lots of snow and ice, such as mountainous areas, winter tyres are often the best choice.

In Belgium and the Benelux, where winters are milder, four-season tyres are an excellent option. Do choose variants with the snowflake symbol, so you’ll be OK even in neighbouring countries where winter tyres are compulsory. Plus, you won’t have to spend time and money on the six-monthly tyre change.

An additional advantage is that four-season tyres usually have more tread than summer tyres, which ensures better grip in rainy weather, something we often face in Belgium.
