What will change in traffic from August 1st?

What will change in traffic from August 1st?

From 1 August 2025, Belgium will be implementing a number of important changes to the system governing number plates and vehicle registrations. Here is a brief overview of what you need to know:

Tips

Cancelling number plates will change and become more expensive

First and foremost, the way in which you deregister a number plate is changing. Until now, this could be done easily and free of charge via bpost, but this will no longer be possible from August onwards. From now on, you will have to send your number plate directly to the DIV. You can do this by post (sufficiently stamped and properly packaged) to DIV – 1212 Brussels, in person at the counter or via the collection boxes of the FPS Mobility in Brussels.

The date of deregistration is the day on which the DIV actually receives and opens your record, so it is important to send your record at least five to seven days in advance if you have an exact deregistration date in mind.

If the plate is lost or stolen, you no longer need to notify the DIV. In that case, simply report it to the police, who will automatically notify the relevant department.

Reusing your number plate? It’s possible (and worth it)

Anyone who sells or deregisters their car has the option of keeping their number plate for another four months. If you reuse it within that period for another vehicle in the same category, you do not need to apply for a new plate. This saves you money, paperwork and time, and the registration process with your insurer is also smoother.

Registering a second-hand motorbike or speed pedelec is now easier

Finally, the registration of second-hand motorcycles and speed pedelecs will also be simplified. The administrative procedure will be greatly simplified from 1 August, making it faster and more user-friendly to register such vehicles correctly.
