Taking an electric car on holiday, how exactly do you do it?
Since the corona period, travelling by (electric) car has become more popular. With the car running on traditional fuel, this is no problem, petrol stations are everywhere. And thanks to the uniform fuel labels that have been mandatory across the whole of Europe since 2018, you shouldn’t be afraid of filling up with the wrong fuel at the pump either. However, travelling to a certain destination with an electric car requires some preparation. So read the tips below and go on holiday carefree!
Tips
Be sure to keep the following tips in mind when travelling with your electric car!
Plan your route and charging stops ahead
Good planning is essential when travelling with an electric car. Make sure you plan your route along roads with sufficient charging stations. Use apps or websites that show charging station locations and availability, so you know where you can stop to charge your car. Via our station finder, you can already find where our sparki superfast chargers are located in the Benelux.
Use dedicated apps and websites
There are several apps and websites available specifically designed for electric car travellers. These tools can provide information about charging stations, including location, type of charging connector and even real-time availability. Some popular options include PlugShare, ChargePoint and A Better Route Planner.
Consider a fast charger
If you will be travelling long distances, it may be worth investing in an electric car that is compatible with fast charging. These fast chargers can charge your car in a fraction of the time compared to standard chargers, significantly reducing your travel time.
Take a backup plan with you
While planning your charging stops in advance is ideal, unexpected circumstances can always arise. Make sure you have a backup plan in case a charging station is unavailable or not working. Identify alternative charging stations along your route just in case.
Optimise your driving behaviour
Adjusting your driving behaviour can help maximise your electric car’s range. For example, try to accelerate and decelerate evenly to save energy. You can also benefit from regenerative braking, which converts the car’s kinetic energy into electrical energy during braking.
Charge your car during stopovers
If you plan to stop for meals, sightseeing or overnight stays during your journey, take advantage of these stopovers to charge your car. That way, you can integrate the required charging time into your travel planning without losing precious time.
