Safe on holiday with MAES!
Traditionally, with summer approaching, travelling is on many people’s minds. But since Covid, this is no longer a certainty. But with the rising number of vaccinations combined with a drop in the number of infections, there may be some more options this summer. Travelling far by plane will probably be out of the question, but travelling in your own country or hopefully Europe will be possible. To keep it as covidproof as possible, travelling by car or mobile home is an excellent alternative instead of crawling along on a plane! So we at MAES thought we’d list some handy tips to help you get to your destination and back home safely!
Tips
Before departure:
If you’re going to grind some miles this summer, of course you want your car to be tiptop. A quick visit to the garage for a small check-up can never hurt. When a major service has been done a long time ago, it is best to do it before you leave on holiday. You can also check the most important things yourself:
- Tyres: Important are the tyres. Checking that they are not worn out yet and also checking tyre pressure are necessary tasks.
- Brakes: Do your brakes make noise, does your car pull to one side when braking or do you feel that the braking time has increased? Then be sure to pass by the garage and have your brakes checked.
- Keep everything at the right level: Be sure to check your engine oil, brake fluid, coolant and windscreen washer fluid levels. We recommend topping these up before departure if the level is low.
- Small things make a world of difference: Sunglasses for in-car use are a very pleasant gadget. But also sunshades to protect you from the heat should you not have air conditioning is always nice! Also be sure to check that your car insurance is still in full working order. Apart from that, of course, you also take some things that we can’t think away in this day and age.
The day before departure:
Gather all important documents and have them ready to take with you. Think of car papers, travel documents, identity cards return travel form, vaccination passport…. Always bring a small repair kit in case problems with the car crop up. Very important also is providing enough food and water. And enjoy a good night’s sleep before leaving!
Day of departure:
Check traffic sites or apps regularly and try to avoid traffic jams, also check last minute www.diplomatie.belgium.be for a latest update on the region you are heading to. It is also very important to take regular breaks. Ideally, you should take a break every 2 hours. Get out of your car and take a walk around before getting behind the wheel again.
If you follow all these tips, you can set off on your car trip with peace of mind.
We wish you a safe journey!
