Fines again for those going to inspection late

After a temporary suspension, fines for late vehicle technical inspection will be back in force in Flanders from 1 September 2024. This measure had previously been halted in spring 2023 due to long waiting times at inspection centres, but Flemish drivers will now again have to pay close attention to their inspection dates. In the meantime, the rules in Wallonia and Brussels have remained unchanged.

Again fines for those late for inspection from 1 September 2024

However, from 1 September 2024, this derogation was ended and you will again get fines if you were late for your car’s inspection. Flemish motorists who are less than a month late for their inspection will now be fined €9.80. For a delay of more than six months, the fine can reach 35 euros.

Rules in Wallonia and Brussels unchanged

Unlike Flanders, in Wallonia and Brussels, fines for late technical inspections have never been suspended. In these regions, drivers must strictly adhere to the set deadlines because waiting times are shorter there and a suspension of fines was not considered necessary. It is therefore crucial for motorists to keep an eye on inspection dates and avoid fines by inspecting on time.

Relaxations for newer vehicles

Despite the reintroduction of fines in Flanders, some relaxations have been introduced for newer vehicles. Since June 2023, vehicles that are well maintained, have less than 160,000 kilometres on the odometer and are less than eight years old may be inspected every two years instead of annually. This measure is intended to reduce pressure on inspection centres and give drivers more flexibility. This would mean fewer inspections for some 500,000 vehicles every year.

HVO emits less particulate matter, so it is less likely to be noticed by the particle counter.
