Troubled by low-hanging sun while driving? Discover some tips here!

Around this time, everyone on the track experiences it from time to time. A low-hanging sun shining loose in your eyes when you are driving your car. It can be hugely dangerous, but these simple tips will keep you safe for yourself and also for other road users.

In both spring and autumn, the sun can hang very low in clear weather and shine extremely brightly on top of it. Especially in the morning or evening, this can cause problems; you may be momentarily blinded when you have the sun in front of you. As a result, you fail to notice oncoming traffic or, for example, pedestrians crossing the road, or notice them too late. According to police figures, 2 accidents a day are due to sun glare! For us, these are 2 accidents too many, so we thought we’d put together for you some tips for when you’re bothered by low-hanging sun.

Sunglasses in the car

Most people always have one in the car and it is also recommended by mobility organisation VAB, but definitely put a good pair of sunglasses in the car. Preferably one with good UV protection or, even better, with polarising lenses. For your own safety and that of other road users, the sunglasses in the car should be of a certain quality.

Use your sun visor

You can also always use your car’s built-in sun visor, but this of course also reduces the window space so you can see less. Also adjust your car seat correctly so that the sun visor can work correctly.

Cleaner windows

Dirty windows make it more dangerous on the road. Especially when combined with bright light, they often become very opaque. So regularly wash the inside of your windscreen too. For the outside, you can of course use your washer fluid & wipers. For this, of course, you should always make sure that there is enough spray fluid in the car and that the wipers are still working correctly. If they are worn out, it is best to replace them as soon as possible. More tips on this subject can be found in our blog with handy tips for winterising your car!

Adjust your speed

If the sun still bothers you, be sure to adjust your speed. If the sun does not bother you too much because you have clean windows, use sun visors & have quality sunglasses on your face, adjust your speed anyway. Because not everyone has taken the same precautions. Also, for example, if you notice in your rear-view mirror that the low-hanging sun is right behind you, also be careful, because for your oncoming car, it will be loose upside down.

Choose a different route

If you have this option, it is also not a bad idea to adjust your route. Often the problem is already solved when the sun is not shining straight into your eyes, so can you take a different route where the sun is turned away a bit this can be more pleasant driving right away.

Remember that low-hanging sun can cause a dangerous situation on the road, so be extra careful and stay alert while driving.
