What is winter fuel and what are the benefits?

As of this month, we are filling up with winter petrol and winter diesel in Belgium. But what exactly does this mean, and what impact does it have on your car and wallet?

What is winter fuel?

Winter petrol and diesel are specially optimised for low temperatures. For example, diesel gets additives like MDFI, which prevent flocculation, while petrol has butane added to improve ignition. This keeps your car running smoothly even when the temperature drops.

How is it different from summer fuel?

Unlike summer fuel, winter diesel can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C. This makes winter fuel ideal for the cold months, without you noticing it in your car’s performance.

What does this mean for your wallet?

Winter fuel is often actually cheaper. The additives are relatively cheap, which can cause a slight price drop in some cases. Yet the final price also depends on other factors, such as transport costs.

Or rather opt for premium fuels?

While standard winter fuel offers sufficient protection, premium fuels often already have advanced additives. This can be useful if you go on winter sports to colder countries, for example.

Do you need to add anything yourself?

In Belgium, there is no need to add add additives to your fuel yourself. Only if you travel to very cold areas can it be useful to stock a special additive for extra protection.

In short, you automatically fill up with the right fuel in winter at our stations, so you don’t have to worry about colder weather.
