Why bird droppings can cause damage
Bird droppings often contain strong acids, especially in coastal areas where birds eat a lot of fish. These acids can bite into your car’s paintwork, usually on hot days when the chemicals soak into the paintwork faster. The combination of heat and the chemical composition of the droppings can cause dull spots and even permanent damage. Read here how to make sure of a scratch-free removal of bird droppings and dead insects.
The right method to remove dirt
As bird droppings dry up and become hard, it can be harder to remove without scratching. Follow these steps to remove droppings effectively and gently:
Soak the droppings
Pour water over the bird droppings to soften them. This will help make the droppings looser and easier to remove.
Use newspaper
Place a few double-folded newspaper pages over the bird droppings and pour water over this too. The newspaper will help retain the water and further soften the dropping.
Soak
Soak for about 20 minutes. This gives the water time to dissolve the droppings and prevents you from damaging the paint by rubbing too hard.
Remove and polish
Carefully remove the newspaper and use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away the softened bird droppings. Always wipe in a single direction to avoid scratches.
Dead insects and other dirt
The same method for the scratch-free removal of bird droppings, applies to removing dead insects. These can cause similar damage as bird droppings, especially if they stick to the car for long periods of time. By softening insect remains with water and a newspaper, you can easily wipe them off without damaging your paintwork.
