HVO… what is it exactly?
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a renewable diesel fuel made from waste materials such as used cooking oil and animal fats. It is a sustainable alternative to conventional diesel while delivering the same performance.

Fuel
The same diesel experience, more sustainable
HVO is a drop-in fuel, meaning you can use it directly in your vehicle—even as 100% HVO—without causing engine issues. This allows you to drive more sustainably without purchasing new vehicles or making additional investments.
It can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90% while also producing fewer fine particles and harmful pollutants. It’s an easy way to lower your environmental footprint and contribute to cleaner air.
HVO can be used without modifications in most modern diesel vehicles, especially those that comply with the EN15940 standard (also referred to as XTL). In most cases, simply checking your vehicle’s owner’s manual or consulting your garage or dealer is sufficient to confirm compatibility.
Refuel with HVO at MAES
HVO is available at many MAES locations, including Bornem-Hingene, Brecht, Deinze, Emblem, Heist-op-den-Berg, Hever, Kampenhout, Londerzeel (Truck), Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver, Tienen-Hakendover, Waasmunster, Wijnegem, Wolvertem, Zwijndrecht, Opwijk-Mazenzele, Kruibeke, Sint-Katelijne-Waver (Auction), Deurne, Ruisbroek, Zulte, Puurs-Ruisbroek (Truck), Erembodegem, De Panne, Haine-Saint-Paul and Tongeren. With the largest HVO network in Belgium, MAES makes sustainable refuelling easier than ever for both private and professional drivers.
An extra advantage during vehicle inspection
HVO doesn’t just benefit your vehicle—it can also make a difference during the technical vehicle inspection. Since HVO produces up to 33% fewer particulate emissions than conventional diesel, diesel vehicles running on HVO may find it easier to comply with emission standards. This can be particularly beneficial for older diesel vehicles, increasing the chances of passing the inspection instead of failing due to excessive particulate emissions.
